Squatting in Europe: how it is punished and prevented in the main countries.




In Germany, the eviction takes place 24 hours after the owner knows it and after filing a complaint with the Police. The German Justice punishes with prison sentences of one year which can be accompanied by a fine. In the United Kingdom, squatting is punishable by a maximum sentence of 51 weeks in prison and fines of 5,700 euros. In addition, the Police can enter the house to evict if they have suspicions and do not require judicial authorization. In France, squatting is an illegal act that is punishable by a maximum of three years in prison and a fine of up to 45,000 euros. In Italy, the owners must first report to the Police, and after them a speedy trial will be held, by which the police can proceed to the expulsion and eviction. Squatting is punishable by a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine.
